CISGS has the primary responsibility for developing and administering courses in physical and biological sciences. The Center cooperates with the MSU Office of Integrative Studies in the development of transcollegiate courses. |

Rich Merritt has been named a University Distinguished Professor. This is among the highest honors that can be bestowed on a faculty member by the university. Those selected for the title have been recognized nationally and internationally for the importance of their teaching, research and outreach achievements. | MSU entomologists informed Senate ag policymakers when Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) visited campus on May 31 to kick-off hearings on reauthorization of the US Farm Bill. As part of the event she visited with scientists in MSU’s Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) to learn more about their research on cellulosic energy crops. |

Krista Buehrer, Nate Walton, and John Pote have been awarded Ceres Trust Graduate Student Grants. All three are students of Dr. Matt Grieshop in the Organic Pest Management Lab. This is Nate and Krista's second award from the Ceres Trust. John submitted his proposal only 3 weeks after beginning work with the lab.
Brittany Sonke has recently been hired at the Detroit Zoo to manage the Karner Blue Butterfly Conservation Program. A former lab manager for Dr. Mark Scriber, Brittany was an National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates student awardee on Scriber’s Papilio research program. Brittany is a co-author on an upcoming publication in the special issue on "Climate change impacts on insects" to be published in Insect Science.
Dr. G. W. Bird sent an update on his Nematology Laboratory. Loren Wernette completed his M.S. program with a thesis on potato nematodes and corky ringspot virus disease. He has returned to his position with AgriBusiness Consulstants. Lesley Schumacher Lott is in the final phases of completing her M.S. on field population of the soybean cyst nematode. Fifteen MSU entomology undergraduates were enrolled in General Nematology Spring Semester 2011. The 2011 field research program has been scaled-back to seven projects plus work in Central Asia including preparation with Baho Eshchanov of Ubekistan for beginning a doctoral program at MSU.

Got kids, because we’ve got Bug Camp! The program offers half-day sessions for kids ages 6-11. Campers investigate the amazing variety of insects through games, hands-on activities, bug collecting and crafts. Insect World is for kids ages 9-12 interested in exploring MSU's campus in a whole new way. This 3-day camp includes a safari in the forests, meadows and wetlands of Michigan State University and introduces children to plants and creatures they've never seen before while on a trek through MSU gardens.
