Entomology Alumni receives CNS Outstanding Alumni Award for 2009
Entomology Alumni, Susan Sylvester, was honored this with the CNS Outstanding Alumni Award. Ms Sylvester received her Master's Degree in 1978 under the direction of Dr. Richard Merritt, who also nominated Ms. Sylvester for this award. Ms. Sylvester is currently working for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resouces in Madison, WI. Department of Entomology Announces its Department Award Winners for 2008

Michigan State University entomologists received high recognition during the 2009 Awards Convocation as one professor and two staff members of the Department of Entomology were recognized for their excellence. Mark Scriber received the Distinguished Faculty Award for his prodigious career at the forefront of the study of insect-plant interactions, and for his service to the teaching and outreach missions of Entomology at MSU. Joy Landis and David Epstein were both awarded the Distinguished Academic Staff award, the first time one unit has had two recipients of this award. Joy has provided exemplary service to the department through her work in the IPM Program. Her online and printed extension materials have ensured the high visibility and value of our outreach programs. Dave is recognized for his team-building sprit, grant getting prowess, and excellence in delivering valuable extension programs for the tree fruit growers in Michigan. Larry Gut wins Excellence in IPM Award

Dr. Larry Gut is the 2009 recipient of the NCB ESA Award for Excellence in IPM. Dr. Gut will be honored for his outstanding contributions in the area of IPM at the upcoming NCB ESA Meeting, being held in St. Louis, MO. March 15-18. Congratulations Larry!
Barb Stinnett wins 2008 Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award
Barb Stinnett, Outreach Coordinator for Entomology, was named one of six recipients of the prestigious Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award for 2008. Ms. Stinnett is responsible for Entomology's outreach programs, which include The Entomology Bughouse, Insect World Science Camp, and 1/2 day Bug Camps that are offered during the summer. She also planned Entomology's 100 Year celebration in 2007. Congratulations Barb!
Dr. Larry Besaw wins MSU Award for Outstanding Service to Study Abroad
The Office of International Studies and Programs has awarded Dr. Larry Besaw one of two awards for Outstanding Service to Study Abroad. Dr. Besaw has been teaching Study Abroad classes since 1977, at various locations like The Canadian Rockies, The Virgin Islands and Costa Rica, to name a few. During his tenure with the Study Abroad program, Dr. Besaw has taught nearly 2,000 students. Congratulations Larry!
MSU Entomology has several winners this year at the 2008 NCB-ESA Meetings
This is an exceptionally good year for our faculty in the awards competition of the North Central Branch of the ESA. Drs. Merritt, Landis and Miller each received awards this year in Columbus Ohio.
Dr. Jim Miller received the Award of Excellence in Integrated Pest Management for his internationally-recognized contributions to the fields of pheromone mating disruption of moth pests and also for his research in Kenya on mosquito ecology, behavior and management.
Dr. Doug Landis received the Recognition Award in Entomology, awarded each year to an entomologists who has made significant contributions to agriculture. This award was given to Dr. Landis to recognize his leadership in the areas of landscape ecology, biological control and invasive species, in addition to his contributions to the profession through graduate student advising and extension programs.

Dr. Richard Merritt received the C.V. Riley Award for outstanding contributions to the science of entomology. Dr. Merritt received this award for his research, teaching and extension-outreach programs in forensic entomology, and for his career contributions to studying and teaching ecology of insects in aquatic environments.
