Dr.Smith’s primary research interest is insect evolution. Using a phylogenetic approach, he studies the natural history and evolution of species and populations, in particular tephritid pests of orchard crops. Of special interest is the comparative analysis of DNA sequences and DNA fingerprints, and their use to infer phylogeny. He is also interested in the analysis of character evolution within a phylogenetic context.
