Dr. Jim Miller

Dr. Miller’s research centers on insect reproductive physiology, behavior, and chemical ecology. Current basic research projects address mechanisms of moth pheromone disruption, sensory physiology of pheromone reception and host-plant acceptance by herbivorous Diptera. A long-running project on the behavioral determinants of oviposition in the onion fly now focuses on stochastic elements in the neural mathematics processes governing oviposition. A new NIH-funded project based in Kenya is exploring the behavioral determinants and processes of oviposition by the malaria mosquito. In addition to the search for improved control strategies of the malaria mosquito, his applied research focuses on improving behavioral controls of moth pests in fruit by pheromone disruption. Considerable effort is directed to new and improved formulations for long-lasting pheromone release in the field and designing disruption strategies tailored to the behavioral and physiological traits of particular moth pests.
