Barb Stinnett wins 2008 Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award
Barb Stinnett, Outreach Coordinator for Entomology, was named one of six recipients of the prestigious Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award for 2008. Ms. Stinnett is responsible for Entomology's outreach programs, which include The Entomology Bughouse, Insect World Science Camp, and 1/2 day Bug Camps that are offered during the summer. She also planned Entomology's 100 Year celebration in 2007. Congratulations Barb!
Dr. Larry Besaw wins MSU Award for Outstanding Service to Study Abroad
The Office of International Studies and Programs has awarded Dr. Larry Besaw one of two awards for Outstanding Service to Study Abroad. Dr. Besaw has been teaching Study Abroad classes since 1977, at various locations like The Canadian Rockies, The Virgin Islands and Costa Rica, to name a few. During his tenure with the Study Abroad program, Dr. Besaw has taught nearly 2,000 students. Congratulations Larry!

MSU Entomology has several winners this year at the NCB-ESA Meetings
This is an exceptionally good year for our faculty in the awards competition of the North Central Branch of the ESA. Drs. Merritt, Landis and Miller each received awards this year in Columbus Ohio.
Dr. Jim Miller received the Award of Excellence in Integrated Pest Management for his internationally-recognized contributions to the fields of pheromone mating disruption of moth pests and also for his research in Kenya on mosquito ecology, behavior and management.
Dr. Doug Landis received the Recognition Award in Entomology, awarded each year to an entomologists who has made significant contributions to agriculture. This award was given to Dr. Landis to recognize his leadership in the areas of landscape ecology, biological control and invasive species, in addition to his contributions to the profession through graduate student advising and extension programs.
Dr. Richard Merritt received the C.V. Riley Award for outstanding contributions to the science of entomology. Dr. Merritt received this award for his research, teaching and extension-outreach programs in forensic entomology, and for his career contributions to studying and teaching ecology of insects in aquatic environments.
Mary Gardiner Named Outstanding Ph.D. Student of 2007 by IOBC
Studying beneficial insects from a landscape perspective earned Mary Gardiner, an entomology Ph.D. candidate who works in the lab of MAES scientist Doug Landis, Outstanding Ph.D. Student of 2007 honors from the Interntional Organization for Biological Control of Noxious Animals and Plants-Nearctic Regional Section (IOBC-NRS). Rich Merritt receives NABS 2007 Award of Excellence
Dr. Richard Merritt, Professor and Chairperson of Entomology, was awarded the North American Benthological Society (NABS) 2007 Award of Excellence in Benthic Science at the annual NABS meeting held in Columbia, SC. This award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in all fields of benthic science. Dr. Merritt is well known for his role as lead editor and author of "An Introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America", his teaching at MSU in the field of benthic science, along with his contributions in forensic entomology that have helped put benthic aquatics on the criminal justice map. Entomology Grad Student wins MSU Fellowship
Megan Fritz, a graduate student working with Dr. Jim Miller, received a $5,000 fellowship from MSU International Programs and Studies to support travel to Kenya to study malaria mosquitoes.
